What FreeAirShare is
FreeAirShare is a browser-based tool that lets people share files and short text messages with other devices on the same local WiFi network. It uses WebRTC peer-to-peer connections for file transfers and a lightweight in-memory server component to coordinate device discovery and text sharing.
Files you share
When you drop files into FreeAirShare, those files stay in your browser's memory. They are transferred directly from your device to the recipient's device over your local network using a WebRTC data channel. Your files are never uploaded to our servers — the server only stores a small metadata record (your peer ID, file count, total size, and a display title) so other devices on the same network can discover that you are sharing. That metadata is deleted automatically when you stop sharing or your session expires.
Text messages you share
The Text tab lets you post a short message visible to others on the same network. Unlike files, text messages are stored temporarily in the server's memory so any device on the network can read them without a direct peer connection. Text entries expire automatically after 10 minutes of inactivity, or when you delete them manually. We do not log or archive message content.
Network and connection data
To group devices onto the same network, our server reads your IP address from each incoming request and derives a subnet identifier (e.g. the first three octets of a private IPv4 address like 192.168.1). This subnet ID is used only to show you shares from devices on your local network. We do not store IP addresses in a database or log them beyond what your hosting provider's standard access logs capture.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to understand aggregate usage patterns — which pages are visited, session duration, and general device/browser breakdown. Both services use cookies and may collect IP addresses. Google Analytics data is processed under Google's privacy policy. Microsoft Clarity may record session replays and heatmaps. You can opt out of Google's ad personalisation at adssettings.google.com.
Advertising
We display ads through Google AdSense. AdSense uses cookies to serve ads based on your browsing history across sites that use Google's advertising network. You can manage ad personalisation preferences at adssettings.google.com. Ad revenue helps keep FreeAirShare free.
PeerJS signalling
WebRTC connections require a signalling server to exchange connection details between peers before the direct channel opens. FreeAirShare uses the public PeerJS cloud signalling service (peerjs.com) for this. Your IP address and a randomly generated peer ID are briefly shared with that service during connection setup. Once a direct WebRTC channel is open, data no longer passes through PeerJS. PeerJS has its own privacy policy at peerjs.com.
Cookies and local storage
FreeAirShare stores one item in localStorage: your theme preference (light or dark mode). Analytics cookies are set by Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity as described above. AdSense sets advertising cookies. No account data, session tokens, or personal information is stored in cookies by our own code.
Children
FreeAirShare is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the service in a way that resulted in personal data being collected, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when our data practices change. The date at the top reflects the last substantive revision. Continued use of the service after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
